Abstract

Questo articolo esplora l'esperienza di una musicoterapista nera all'interno di Turbulence, una performance terapeutica sviluppata da terapisti di arti creative e artisti teatrali neri e mulatti, nell'area della Greater New York City. L'autrice condivide le proprie esperienze e reazioni personali in qualità di partecipante, attore di processo, musicista e musicoterapista all'interno di questo processo di gruppo. Verrà inoltre condivisa una valutazione dell'integrazione della musica all'interno della performance, in particolare nei termini di come determinate tradizioni musicali possano essere utilizzate per elevare l'espressione di coloro le cui identità sono storicamente emarginate. Inoltre, l’articolo esplora come gruppi di affinità basati sull'identità sociale e supportati da un processo creativo, possano diminuire sentimenti di isolamento e rafforzare un senso di empowerment fra terapisti delle arti creative identificati BPOC.

Jasmine Nicole Edwards, Music Therapy, New York University, USA

Jasmine Edwards is a music therapist working within a pediatric hospital in New York City. Jasmine has a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from Florida State University, and her master’s degree in music therapy from New York University. She has experience working in private practice, outpatient, school-based, and medical settings, and is trained in NICU-MT, First Sounds: Rhythm, Breath, Lullaby, and Austin Vocal Psychotherapy. Jasmine has a vested interest in bringing discussions of power, privilege, and oppression into music therapy training and education. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Howard University, New York University, and Nazareth College. Jasmine identifies as a Black woman.
