Scheherazade Tillet, A Long Walk Home

Scheherazade Tillet is a photographer, curator,  art therapist, and feminist activist whose work explores the themes of trauma, healing, pleasure, and play.  Born in Boston, raised in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, and Newark, NJ, and now working in Chicago, Tillet is actively embedded in the communities with whom she collaborates. In 2003, she co-founded A Long Walk Home (ALWH), along with her sister Salamishah Tillet, a national nonprofit that uses art to empower young people and end violence against girls and women. ALWH’s mission centers on increasing resources, opportunities, and creative outlets for society’s most vulnerable girls and women: girls and women of color. 

Currently, Tillet also serves as the inaugural artist-in-residence at Rutgers University between Shine Portrait Studio and New Arts Justice. In 2022, she will have a solo show Project for Empty Space on Black Girlhood.

She received her Masters of Art Therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2005) and a B.A. from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her art and activism have been featured in New York Times, Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, Teen Vogue,  The Guardian, Marie Claire, Teen Vogue, Elle Decor, Gagosian Journal, and on HBO, MSNBC, and NPR.
