"The Butterfly Blues” explores a Black queer man’s journey towards owning his identity as a Black queer spiritual man. The piece highlights the detrimental impacts of living within a cis-heteronormative world. The performance traces the complex and weighted navigations of battling oppression, grappling with faith, and accepting self.

Author Biography

Rodney Simpson Jr., Modos Dance Company

Rodney Simpson Jr. (he/him/his) is a Black queer creative and storyteller. Rodney is the CEO and Executive Artistic Director of Modos Dance Company, which strives to continue liberating our people through movement guided by the four pillars: foundation, relationship, faith, and expression. The spirit of his purpose is aligned to uprooting systemic structures aligned with oppressive, anti-LGBTQ, and anti –BIPOC practices. Rodney is anchored in a thought-provoking and inclusive lens reflected in his studies at Lesley University for a Master’s in Dance/Movement Therapy.  His entrepreneurial efforts with Modos Dance Company unlock spaces within community, offering therapy-based movement experiences while providing room for self-discovery and fostering culturally- centered therapeutic environments. Rodney believes in providing a space to remember, reclaim and reimagine the existence of the QTBIPOC (Queer & Trans Black and Indigenous people of color) community.
