Polish Music Therapy has Many Faces

One of them is the music therapy applied in general hospitals and rehabilitation centres. At The Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw for over 30 years the physician and music therapist Maciej Kierył applied his original relaxation method for children. The method is described in many articles, presented at numerous conferences in Poland and it is included at various University courses. His method is currently used in many hospitals and schools under the title The Mobile Model of Music Reaction. Ms. Diana Gulińska-Grzeluszka is currently writing a doctoral thesis based on the model under my supervision. The preliminary results were presented in the form of a poster at the 6th European Music Therapy Conference held in Jyvaskyla, Finland, between June,16-19, 2004.

Music therapy is used in Polish hospitals either as a separate therapeutic method ,as at the Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Ustron, or in conjunction with other art therapy mehods, choreotherapy, bibliotherapy, leisure activity, and at times also horti-culture therapy.

Which form it takes is described and verified by my Culture Therapy Model (Szulc, 1994). The concept of culture therapy, where music occupies the central role is lectured in Poland e.g. at the Pedagogy and Arts Faculty of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan; The Higher Managerial and Humaman Science School „Milenium" in Gniezno and at doctoral studies at the Wrocław Uniwersity. The two latter mentioned schools submitted their teaching programmes for the ECARTE. The accreditation has already been granted for The Wrocław University.

Music therapy has a potential to become popular in many Polish hospitals if the appropriate climate is created. A good example is provided by the Director of the Silesian Centre for Rehabilitation in Ustroń.
