Introduction to "Texas" series of interviews

Janice Harris

I am glad to have been asked to provide an introduction for the Texas series of Interviews in Voices. Texas is the second largest U.S. state (smaller only than Alaska) and, with its size come many examples of ways in which Texas is viewed differently than any other state. Some say that Texas is a "whole other country," and music therapy in Texas is just as unique. There are around 250 music therapists in Texas working in a variety of settings. The majority of music therapists seem to work in the public school systems and in private practice, but they are also in hospitals, nursing homes, state schools, and psychiatric facilities. There are five universities offering degrees in music therapy.

Texas is home to many innovators in music therapy, including Joe Pinson, the first interviewee. I hope you enjoy getting to know them through this series. They helped train many of the music therapists in Texas and offered mentorship to those new to the profession or new to the area, a tradition we strive to continue today. Thank you to those featured in the series, and to those who conducted the interviews!
